Cancer: A Journey of Awareness, Struggle & Natural Healing 🌿
(By Ayush Awasthi, BAMS Final Year Student)
🌼 Introduction – When I First Encountered the Word "Cancer"
I still remember the day I first heard the word “cancer” as a child. It was about a distant relative who suddenly lost weight, kept getting fevers, and had to go to a big hospital in Delhi.
As a kid, I couldn’t understand what was happening, but I could feel the fear in the faces of adults around me.
Later in my BAMS journey, I came across many patients and families dealing with this disease – some with hope, some with pain.
That’s when I decided I wanted to write something that’s not just medical, but human. Something for you, me, our parents, friends – everyone.
Absolutely, here’s the same 120-word personal story section in English, written in a natural tone suitable for your blog:
🌿 My Personal Experience – When Cancer Hit my known
"One of my distant relatives was diagnosed with early-stage colon cancer. Along with conventional allopathic treatment, they also followed some Ayurvedic support therapies. I suggested them to take Turmeric (Curcumin), Wheatgrass juice, and Ashwagandha regularly. These herbs are known to boost immunity and reduce stress. They also started practicing Pranayama (especially Anulom-Vilom) and daily meditation. I noticed a positive change in their energy and mindset within a few weeks. They started feeling more confident and peaceful."
In cancer treatment, every step matters. While Ayurveda may not replace mainstream therapy, it plays a strong complementary role in healing the body and mind.
🔍 What is Cancer? (Simple Explanation)
Cancer isn’t one disease – it’s a group of diseases. It happens when some of our body’s cells grow uncontrollably and don’t stop when they should.
These cells can form a lump (called a tumor), spread to other parts of the body, and disturb normal functions.
In easy words:
Normal cells = disciplined soldiers
Cancer cells = rebels who don’t follow rules
🧬 Types of Cancer – Know the Common Ones
There are over 100 types of cancer, but here are some common ones in India:
- Breast Cancer – common in urban women, often detected late.
- Lung Cancer – mostly seen in smokers or those exposed to pollution.
- Oral Cancer – very common due to tobacco and gutkha use.
- Cervical Cancer – preventable but many women still die due to lack of screening.
- Prostate Cancer – occurs in elderly men.
- Blood Cancer (Leukemia) – affects blood-forming tissues.
👨⚕️ Symptoms I’ve Observed in Patients
When I interacted with cancer patients during my internships and free health check-up camps, I noticed many of them ignored early symptoms like:
- Sudden weight loss
- Weakness for no reason
- Lumps or swelling
- Long-standing ulcers (especially in the mouth)
- Unexplained bleeding
- Persistent cough
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
Personal Note:
One uncle who visited our camp had mouth ulcers for 6 months. He thought it was “acidity.” Later, he was diagnosed with oral cancer. That moment made me realize how important awareness is.
🧫 What Causes Cancer?
There isn’t one single reason. It's usually a mix of many factors:
- Genetics (family history)
- Smoking / Tobacco / Gutkha
- Pollution & Pesticides
- Processed food & junk food
- Radiation exposure
- Infections like HPV, Hepatitis B, etc.
- Stress and lifestyle issues
One of my professors said:
"Cancer doesn’t just happen in the body. It begins in the lifestyle." – and I truly believe that.
🏥 Diagnosis – How Do We Detect Cancer?
If you or someone you know has strange symptoms, don’t ignore it. Early detection saves lives.
Common diagnostic methods:
- Blood tests
- Biopsy (taking tissue sample)
- Ultrasound / CT scan / MRI
- Endoscopy / Colonoscopy
- Pap smear (for women)
💊 Treatment – How Cancer is Treated
Depending on the type and stage, doctors suggest:
- Surgery – to remove tumors
- Chemotherapy – medicines to kill cancer cells
- Radiation – focused beams to destroy cells
- Immunotherapy – boosts the body’s own immunity
- Hormone Therapy – for hormone-sensitive cancers
Personal Touch:
One patient I worked with had chemotherapy and told me, “It felt like poison, but it saved me.” The journey was painful, but he’s alive today, and that’s what matters.
🌿 Natural and Ayurvedic Ways to Support Cancer Care
As a BAMS student, I’ve always believed that Ayurveda isn’t just an alternative – it's a complementary power. While modern medicine fights cancer cells, Ayurveda can:
✅ Boost immunity
✅ Detoxify the body
✅ Improve strength during chemotherapy
✅ Improve digestion and appetite
Some Ayurvedic herbs used in cancer care:
Herb | Benefits |
---|---|
Ashwagandha | Fights stress, improves strength |
Turmeric (Haldi) | Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant |
Guduchi (Giloy) | Immunity booster |
Tulsi | Detoxification and respiratory health |
Amla | Rich in Vitamin C, antioxidant |
Panchakarma therapies like Basti (medicated enema), Abhyanga (massage), and Nasya can also help detox and improve mental clarity.
🍎 Diet & Lifestyle Changes for Prevention
- Eat fresh fruits, green veggies, and millets
- Avoid junk food, processed snacks, soft drinks
- Say no to tobacco, gutkha, cigarettes
- Do yoga or brisk walking daily
- Manage stress with meditation or prayer
A Real Story:
A woman who had breast cancer came to our clinic. After treatment, she completely shifted to a sattvic diet and started Surya Namaskar daily. It’s been 4 years – no relapse. She says “Positivity is medicine too.”
🛑 Why Cancer is Still Feared in India
- Lack of awareness
- Late diagnosis
- Fear of expensive treatment
- Social stigma (specially for women)
We must normalize talking about it. Cancer isn’t a death sentence – especially when caught early.
❤️ My Message To You
If you’re reading this, remember:
- Take every strange symptom seriously.
- Encourage your family to go for regular checkups.
- Don't fear cancer – understand it.
Cancer might be powerful, but early detection, proper treatment, and a strong mind are more powerful.
🙏 Conclusion – From My Heart to Yours
This blog is not just a medical article. It’s a combination of what I’ve learned as a student, what I’ve seen as a person, and what I’ve felt while talking to real patients. I hope it touches you.
