Liver Health & Ayurvedic Remedies – Complete Guide for Indians
By Ayush Awasthi – Ayurvedic Student
Introduction – The Liver: Our Silent Protector
During my Ayurvedic studies, I often saw patients who didn’t know they had a liver problem until it became serious. It reminded me of something my guruji once said:
"Yakrit ek chupchaap kaam karne wala dost hai, jo apni importance tabhi batata hai jab wo thak jaata hai."
I remember my hostel days when a senior suddenly developed jaundice during exam time. He was a non-alcoholic, ate hostel food, and didn’t show obvious symptoms except tiredness. Only when his eyes turned yellow, he went for a test. That case made me realise — liver diseases don’t always announce their arrival loudly.
In Ayurveda, Yakrit (liver) is connected to Pitta dosha and Rakta Dhatu (blood). Any disturbance in Pitta can affect liver function and overall health.
Liver Functions – In Simple Words
The liver is like a factory that never shuts down. Here’s what it does:
- Detoxification – Removes toxins from blood.
- Bile Production – Helps digest fats.
- Energy Storage – Stores glycogen for later.
- Blood Clotting Support – Produces clotting factors.
- Immunity – Works as a security guard against infections.
Personal analogy: In my village, we have a water filter tank. It quietly filters dirt all day long. If it stops working, the whole supply gets dirty. The liver works exactly like that tank for our blood.
Common Causes of Liver Problems in Today’s Life
- Alcohol – Biggest cause of cirrhosis in India.
- Junk food – Increases fat deposits in the liver.
- Overuse of medicines – Painkillers & antibiotics can harm the liver.
- Viral Infections – Hepatitis A, B, C.
- Metabolic Issues – Obesity, diabetes.
- Poor water quality – Common in villages & urban slums.
- Lack of exercise – Leads to fatty liver.
Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
- Yellow skin/eyes (jaundice)
- Constant tiredness
- Pain or heaviness in right upper abdomen
- Swelling in legs or stomach
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dark urine / pale stools
- Itchy skin

Extra Real-Life Cases
Case 1 – Hostel Mess & Fatty Liver
One of my seniors in college developed fatty liver in the 3rd year. The reason? Regular hostel mess food — oily puris, paneer pakoras, and sweet dishes every night. Within months, his digestion weakened. We suggested skipping deep-fried hostel snacks, taking triphala at night, and walking after dinner. His reports improved in 4 months.
Case 2 – Post-Pregnancy Jaundice
A friend’s sister developed jaundice after childbirth due to low immunity and infection. We gave her sugarcane juice daily, light khichdi, and Kutki powder. She avoided milk, curd, and heavy food for 3 weeks. Recovery was smooth.
Case 3 – Alcohol-Related Cirrhosis
My neighbour’s relative in Lucknow had advanced cirrhosis due to years of heavy drinking. While modern treatment was ongoing, we added Punarnava decoction and a salt-free diet to control swelling. Though not curable, these measures helped improve his comfort.
